🚗 Auto Insurance Premium Comparison (2026)

📍 Florida

• Florida’s auto insurance costs are notably high compared with many states and often rank among the most expensive in the country.
• According to Experian’s January 2026 data, the average annual cost of car insurance in Florida is about $2,353 (≈ $196/month).
• Other analyses show Florida’s average can range around $3,500+ per year for full coverage depending on survey and coverage level.

➡️ Key factors: high traffic volume, high accident rates, large numbers of uninsured drivers, and Florida’s past “no-fault” system are all contributors to higher premiums.

📍 Michigan

• Michigan’s auto insurance rates are among the highest in the nation — significantly above both the national average and Florida’s.
• One comprehensive 2026 ranking shows Michigan’s average at about $3,375 annually, the highest among the states listed.
• Another comparison indicates the “usual annual” cost in Michigan (~$2,694) is about $875 more than Florida’s typical average (~$1,819).

➡️ Why it’s high: Michigan’s no-fault system, high minimum coverage requirements, and limited underwriting factors (e.g., insurers can’t use credit in many places) tend to push premiums up.

📍 New York

• New York’s auto insurance costs also trend above national norms, though generally below Florida and well below Michigan’s average in some studies.
• One comparison shows Florida’s average annual cost (~$1,819) being about $369 less than New York’s (~$2,188).
• Another state ranking places New York around $2,898 per year for full coverage.

➡️ Drivers in NY can still see high premiums due to population density, litigation environment, and mandatory coverage requirements — though reforms have been proposed to try to curb costs.

📍 Pennsylvania

• Pennsylvania’s auto insurance rates are generally lower than Florida’s but still in the middle nationally.
• In direct comparisons, the average Pennsylvania premium (~$1,428) is about $392 cheaper than Florida (~$1,819).

➡️ Pennsylvania’s rates are influenced by lower accident and uninsured motorist rates relative to Florida, and it does not carry the same structural cost drivers (like Florida’s past no-fault model).

📊 Quick Snapshot (Approx. Avg. Annual Rates)

State Approx. Auto Insurance Cost (Annual)
Florida ~$2,300 — $3,500+
Michigan ~$2,700 — $3,300+
New York ~$2,100 — $2,900+
Pennsylvania ~$1,400 — $2,800

🧠 What This Means for Drivers

🔹 Florida: Higher than national average auto premiums — in part due to risk factors like accidents and litigation environment — though recent tort reforms may help ease increases in some areas.
🔹 Michigan: Among the highest in the U.S., often significantly more expensive than Florida depending on the data source.
🔹 New York: Higher than Florida in some analyses and still above national norms, though rates vary widely by metro area.
🔹 Pennsylvania: More affordable than Florida on average, and typically less expensive than Michigan or New York.

🪪 Why Rates Vary by State

Insurance premiums depend on many factors including:

• State insurance laws & requirements
• Population density & traffic congestion
• Frequency of claims & accident rates
• Uninsured motorist rates
• Weather and catastrophic risk
• Litigation and claim environment

This is why states like Florida and Michigan often see higher average premiums compared with states like Pennsylvania.

When moving to Florida it is best to reach out to several insurance companies for auto insurance. In Michigan bundling home and auto often gets you the best rates but in Florida I found having separate policies saved me money. When moving to Florida I did find auto insurance comparable and even a little less than the full coverage policy I had in Michigan.

So while home insurance will cost you more in Florida, auto insurance can be an equal change. Added Bonus is that I drive considerably less miles in Florida so saving on gas. Trade gas money for a good pair of sneakers and walk to your destinations in Florida!! Many communities are golf cart communities so you can also utilize other sources of transportation.

If you are considering a move I would love to put my experience and knowledge to work for you!!
